Master of every style he turned to, Bach brought unprecedented beauty to choral and instrumental music. The motets are the perfect showcase for Town Hall Associate Artist Ex Cathedra, and, as legendary cellist Pablo Casals once remarked, “Bach is the very essence of music, and the cello suites are the very essence of Bach.”

BBC Music magazine’s Editor, Oliver Condy, recommends tonight’s concert: “Bach’s motets, written at various stages in his life, have everything of the composer in them. Even Mozart, on hearing Singet dem Herrn, was heard to say ‘Now, there’s a piece one can learn from.’ You can’t argue with that.”

6.15pm Pre-concert talk by Lyndon Jenkins.
