CBSO Jansen plays Sibelius
More Info Book TicketsSat 7 Nov 7:00pm Symphony Hall
Mendelssohn was one of music's great travellers - he even made it to Birmingham! And there's no better way to launch a concert than with his _Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage_: all the fun of his _Hebrides_ overture, but with none of the seasickness. And then we're off - first to the brooding northern landscape of Sibelius' impassioned Violin Concerto (with the stunning Janine Jansen as soloist), then to the sunlit Alipne meadows of Brahms' happiest symphony. Lullabies, horn-calls and jubilant trumpets all come together in some of the loveliest music Brahms ever wrote; charismatic guest-conductor Ilan Volkov should make an entertaining guide. Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra
More Info Book TicketsSun 8 Nov 8:00pm Symphony Hall
Following on from last year’s sell out shows at the Royal Albert Hall and the critically acclaimed version on BBC2, Bill Bailey’s surreal comic and musical imagination is let loose once more as he brings this show to Symphony Hall. Performing with some of the finest orchestras throughout Britain, accompanied by Anne Dudley, one of the UK’s most celebrated composers and arrangers. At Symphony Hall he will be joined by the CBSO. A classically trained musician, Bill has for many years covered all kinds of music in his comedy and this show takes the form of an irreverent guide to the instruments of the orchestra, plus 70s cop show music, news themes, Bill’s own songs, and some of Anne’s specially written new works. Hear the trombone’s affection for Cockney music, and find out what bassoon players are secretly obsessed with. It's a unique show which The Times called ‘blissfully funny’ and which Stephen Fry described as _“wonderfully enjoyable... like driving a Rolls-Royce off-road’_ "See a taster of the show here.":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pterg8o2Zc4&feature=related *Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide To The Orchestra will be released on DVD on Monday 23 November 2009*

CBSO The Planets
More Info Book TicketsTue 10 Nov 7:30pm Symphony Hall
Midland composers have always aimed high. Worcestershire lad Edward Elgar dreamed of making it big in the capital, and it shows: his Cockaigne overture positively glitters with the pageantry and bustle of Edwardian London. Gustav Holst, meanwhile, headed for the stars! His Planets suite isn’t just famous for great tunes like Jupiter and Mars; it’s a tremendous musical odyssey towards the infinite, written for a super-size orchestra and filled with sounds of jaw-dropping strangeness and beauty. Amidst all this grandeur, Grieg’s ever-popular Piano Concerto offers gentler charms - but with Leon McCawley at the keyboard, it will be every bit as spectacular.

Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing the Piano
More Info Book TicketsSun 22 Nov 7:30pm Symphony Hall
Legendary composer, performer and producer Ryuichi Sakamoto will tour the UK for the first time in fifteen years this autumn. Ryuichi will present audiences with an opportunity to hear and experience the new arrangements from ‘out of noise’ alongside favourites from his extensive and highly acclaimed recording career. Sakamoto's interest in different types of music - jazz, bossa nova, modern classical, dub and gamelan - was evident in his writing for YMO, his own solo albums, and starting in 1983 with _Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence_, a series of soundtracks. That year, Sakamoto left YMO to launch his career as a solo artist and to pursue his interest in "world music." These interests have carried over in Sakamoto's collaborations with, among others, David Bowie, David Byrne, David Sylvian, Iggy Pop, Youssou N'dour, Robbie Robertson, Caetano Veloso, as well as writers William Burroughs and William Gibson. Sakamoto's best-known work is probably the soundtrack to _Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence_, but in 1987, his score for Bertolucci's _The Last Emperor_ won him an Oscar, a Grammy, a Golden Globe, as well as the New York, Los Angeles and British Film Critics Association awards for best original soundtrack. Since then, he has worked with Bertolucci twice (_The Sheltering Sky, Little Buddha_), Oliver Stone (_Wild Palms_), Pedro Almodovar (_High Heels_), and Brian De Palma twice (_Snake Eyes, Femme Fatale_).
