  • Ryuichi Sakamoto: Playing the Piano

    More Info Cancelled

Sun 22 Nov 7:30pm Symphony Hall

Legendary composer, performer and producer Ryuichi Sakamoto will tour the UK for the first time in fifteen years this autumn. Ryuichi will present audiences with an opportunity to hear and experience the new arrangements from ‘out of noise’ alongside favourites from his extensive and highly acclaimed recording career. Sakamoto's interest in different types of music - jazz, bossa nova, modern classical, dub and gamelan - was evident in his writing for YMO, his own solo albums, and starting in 1983 with _Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence_, a series of soundtracks. That year, Sakamoto left YMO to launch his career as a solo artist and to pursue his interest in "world music." These interests have carried over in Sakamoto's collaborations with, among others, David Bowie, David Byrne, David Sylvian, Iggy Pop, Youssou N'dour, Robbie Robertson, Caetano Veloso, as well as writers William Burroughs and William Gibson. Sakamoto's best-known work is probably the soundtrack to _Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence_, but in 1987, his score for Bertolucci's _The Last Emperor_ won him an Oscar, a Grammy, a Golden Globe, as well as the New York, Los Angeles and British Film Critics Association awards for best original soundtrack. Since then, he has worked with Bertolucci twice (_The Sheltering Sky, Little Buddha_), Oliver Stone (_Wild Palms_), Pedro Almodovar (_High Heels_), and Brian De Palma twice (_Snake Eyes, Femme Fatale_).

Please note: This event is now cancelled.

  • CBSO Nelsons Conducts Bruckner's Third

    More Info Book Tickets

Wed 25 Nov 7:30pm Symphony Hall

Bruckner dedicated his Third Symphony to Richard Wagner - and there’s more than a hint of the _Ride of the Valkyries_ about this stirring, powerfully romantic symphony. Vast musical landscapes, hymns of triumph and moments of heart-breaking poetry - if you heard Andris Nelsons conducting Wagner and Strauss last season, you won’t want to miss his Bruckner. But the evening begins with the serene beauty of Wagner’s _Parsifal_ prelude - while Magnus Lindberg’s sparky Clarinet Concerto (played by the artist who inspired it) is like a dazzling firework display amidst all this teutonic grandeur. *Pre-Concert Talk at 6.15pm* Bruckner and Lindberg BBC Radio 3’s Stephen Johnson introduces tonight’s programme. Thu 3 Dec 7:30pm Symphony Hall

_“When I think of God, I can’t help writing cheerful music,”_ admitted Joseph Haydn. So it’s no wonder that his great oratorio _The Creation_ is one of the freshest, happiest and most unstuffy pieces of religious music ever written. Fizzy operatic arias, blockbuster choruses and a visionary musical depiction of the birth of the Universe itself - they’re all part of Haydn’s shamelessly tuneful version of the Book of Genesis. Adam and Eve even get their own love-duet! There’s no more enjoyable way to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Haydn’s death - and to hear the CBSO’s magnificent chorus in full, resplendent voice. Tonight’s concert is supported by the Tolkien Trust. Pre-concert talk - 6.15pm - *Haydn's Creation in a post-Darwinian World* Lord Harries of Pentregarth, the former Bishop of Oxford, gives his perspective on the significance of the Creation story in the Eighteenth Century.
