Following on from its success in 2008, International Dance Festival Birmingham returns this April/May, produced by DanceXchange and Birmingham Hippodrome. With four more weeks of fantastic dance activities planned for traditional theatre venues, shop windows, outdoor spaces, and even a canal barge, there will be hundreds of opportunities to experience and be a part of the action-packed programme! Performances taking place at Town Hall include the contemporary and traditional flamenco of Chanta La Mui and _Gnosis_ - a new solo work exploring the kathak roots of acclaimed choreographer Akram Khan. Produced by DanceXchange and Birmingham Hippodrome, International Dance Festival Birmingham 2010 is funded by Advantage West Midlands, Arts Council England West Midlands, Birmingham City Council, and supported by Media Partner BBC WM and Accommodation Partner Crowne Plaza, Birmingham City Centre. IDFB 2010 is working in partnership with the West Midlands Culture Programme for London 2012.

Directed and choreographed by Akram Khan, _Gnosis_ is a solo show inspired by the Mahabharata story of Queen Ghandari. Akram has always been fascinated by comic-book superheroes and villains, and how these comic-book characters are in some way inspired by real characters that exist in our societies. _Gnosis_ is about the journeys of different characters inspired from myth; whether kings, queens, heroes or gods, they exist in our societies - from the past to present civilisations. “_The wunderkind of Western contemporary dance and classical Indian kathak._” *The Times* Khan’s choregraphy has been developed in collaboration with the internationally renowned Kathak masters Sri Pratap Pawar and Gauri Sharma Tripathi, and the show features a band of musicians including Yoshie Sunahata, a taiko drummer from acclaimed Japanese company KODO.
