Education/Community

The aim of the Education & Community Department is to promote public appreciation of music and the arts by using the resources of Town Hall and Symphony Hall. We aim to Invite, Engage and Inspire around 10,000 people every year, providing access to our many performers and performances, offering a wide range of interactive, participatory experiences.
Our participants range from under 5’s, families and senior citizens to school children, young people and members of the general public. We run educational tours of both venues and five programmes of activity. We also offer work experience, placement opportunities, teacher training, CPD (young people’s workforce) and online resources.

Programmes of activity:
Science of Sound
This programme looks at the acoustics and architecture of both auditoria and the music, material, maths and mechanics of the maginicent pipe organ.
Singing
Our singing programme supports existing city-wide singing provision by providing regular large-scale choral events for children and young people, an ongoing outreach programme of singing in schools, and adult training opportunities for the development of conducting and rehearsal skills.
Discovering our Heritage
This aspect of our work tells the story of Birmingham’s social, political, musical and architectural history using Town Hall’s community exhibition and audio guide and through our regular tours of Town Hall and Symphony Hall.
Inspiring Performance
We welcome children, young people and families to our monthly series of children’s events at Town Hall and our weekly activities for young people in our Multimedia Studio, situated under the stage of Symphony Hall. To access free or heavily reduced tickets to performances and opportunities to meet professional musicians please go to Concerts Inside Out
Technology in Music and Media
These projects use technology in fun and innovative ways to inspire children and young people to explore music, the arts and their own imagination!
Working within our unique concert halls and our cutting edge Patrick Musictech Studio we strive to integrate technology with artists and performances to create an inspiring multimedia experience for all involved.
