One Star

One Star

One star upon a faultless sky
and half a moon to journey by,
a hypnotising drone of cars
and lights that pass in fits and starts
to blind us from the road ahead.

Beyond a screen of conifers
the distant city lights shine out.
Upon the crowded motorway
with stiffened backs and aching necks
we weave our way across the night
and try to shut the madness out.

Half a moon to travel by,
A star upon a vaulted sky.
A beam to catch the traveller’s eye
beneath the evening’s closing eye.
An engine’s throb, a throttle’s cry,
a scream of traffic charging by
and there, upon a darkening sky,
One Star.

A star.
An angel’s twinkling eye.
Two thousand years are rolling by
with half a moon and half an eye
to cast upon the darkening sky,
One star.

As western wise men journey by
they wander on,
we wonder why.
They look upon their sign and sigh.

One Star.

We wander on,
we wonder why.
We look to find a sign.
We sigh.

Weave a way beneath
a half lit sky

One star.
