The BBC Big Band is now in its 3rd season of concerts in its role as Associate Ensemble at Town Hall.
Since the re-opening of Town Hall in 2007, the BBC Big Band has taken part in over 17 performances. These, in turn have been broadcast regularly on BBC Radio 2’s weekly showcase Big Band Special, which celebrated its 30th anniversary in September 2009.
Presented by Clare Teal, the BBC Big Band’s concerts explore the full range of jazz and swing music. Previous guests at Town Hall include singers Kurt Elling, Mark Murphy and Jack Bruce as well as great instrumentalists such as saxophonist Phil Woods.
During the current season the BBC Big Band will be exploring the music of George Gershwin from a modern perspective with Birmingham’s own Jaki Graham, celebrating the heritage of popular song in a centenary tribute to Johnny Mercer, as well as welcoming Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble New York Voices. A further three concerts are planned for Spring 2010.
