Restoration Project

A dedicated team of conservation and construction experts, led by Wates Construction, Urban Design and Rodney Melville and Partners, has painstakingly renovated this Grade 1 listed buiding.

The £35m restoration project has been funded by Birmingham City Council (£18.3m), Heritage Lottery Fund (£13.7m) and European Regional Development Fund (£3m).

Stonework

The stone with which the Town Hall was built is popularly known as Anglesey Marble and is a white carboniferous limestone . It was originally quarried in north Wales, with the stone shipped 80 miles by sea and 100 miles by canal to Birmingham. more
Paintwork

The painstaking analysis revealed layer upon layer of different types and colours of paints applied over the past 170 years, including a variety of distempers and oil and lead-based paints. more
Plasterwork

Prior to undertaking repairs to the plasterwork, careful investigative work was undertaken to identify the age, composition and condition of the existing plaster. more
Roof and Podium

In a major engineering feat of its time, the original roof supports of the Town Hall were hoisted into place without the use of any mechanical aid, relying simply on manual labour, ropes and pulleys. more
