Over the last decade, Sakari Oramo has conducted the Centenary performances of all three of Elgar’s choral masterpieces for the Birmingham Triennial Festival – Gerontius, The Apostles and, just last year, The Kingdom. Now Sakari reaches journey’s end and concludes this Elgar Anniversary weekend with a second performance of Elgar’s final oratorio. Elgar never finished his New Testament Trilogy but this second instalment finds his inspiration in full flight. Opening with a majestic orchestral prelude and painted in glowing orchestral colours, this stirring choral setting of the Acts of Jesus’ disciples is the closest he ever got to writing an opera.
