English Landscapes Classical Encounters with Orchestra of the Swan

Tue 18 Mar 2008 7:30pm at Town Hall

In the 19th century Britain was known as a ‘land without music’ but the last century, led by Edward Elgar, saw an astonishing renaissance in the musical life of the country, conducting many times in Town Hall Birmingham, so it is fitting to programme his great masterpiece for strings, the Introduction & Allegro. Birmingham composer John Joubert’s 80th birthday is celebrated with a performance of oboe concerto, an OOTS commission and the concert concludes with Britten’s virtuoso showpiece, the Variations on a theme of Frank Bridge

‘...Orchestra of the Swan really showed its mettle in Britten’s Frank Bridge Variations…all the work’s parodying humour surfaced with a genuine exuberance…’ Musical Opinion
