Jimmy Carr - Rapier Wit Please Note: The Show is not suitable for Under 16s.
Sat 27 Feb 2010 Symphony Hall
By popular demand, Jimmy Carr plays an extra date of his _Rapier Wit_ tour at Symphony Hall. A heady mix of artistic integrity, loyalty and greed has put Jimmy back on the road. If you only see one comedy show this year...What’s the matter with you? Get out more. ‘Rapier wit’ is defined as clever, quick, intelligent humour. Please note, Jimmy Carr doesn’t have ‘the long sword of a gentleman’ and even if you like him, ‘clever, quick and intelligent’ is a bit of a stretch.

Jimmy Carr - Joke Technician
Fri 30 Jan 2009 Symphony Hall
Jimmy Carr is not just a TV star. He’s won awards, released chart topping DVDs (there’s a new one out this November), written a best selling book and broken box office records by performing to over 500,000 people in the last three years. He may be the hardest working man in comedy. But perhaps he wouldn’t have to be if he had a little bit more talent. This show is exactly the same as last year’s except every single word. It’s rude, crude and offensive but those aren’t the only reasons you’ll enjoy it. Not to be missed, unless it’s not your kind of thing.

Jimmy Carr Repeat Offender
Fri 5 Oct Symphony Hall
Jimmy Carr is one of the biggest faces in comedy. Literally - he’s got one of the biggest faces. Fresh from presenting 8 Out of 10 Cats (Channel 4), writing his first book (The Naked Jape: co-written by Lucy Greeves & out in paperback 27 September 2007), and recording his 3rd DVD (Comedian: released November 2007), British Comedy Award winner Jimmy Carr is back on the road doing what he does best with a brand new show: Repeat Offender. Not suitable for the easily offended. In fact not even a show for people that are quite difficult to offend. Essentially this is a show for people without a moral compass. Book early to avoid disappointment (or alternatively lower your expectations). "www.jimmycarr.com":http://www.jimmycarr.com Over 16's recommended

*This is Soul* brings together the giants of soul music in one sensational show. *Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band* are 60s soul legends, famously immortalised in the Dexy’s Midnight Runners song _Geno_. *Jimmy James*, formerly of The Vagabonds, scored a hit with their cover of _Red Red Wine_, and he brings his own vintage style soul to this line-up. Jimmy Webb & The Webb Brothers featuring Romeo Stodart of The Magic Numbers
Sun 8 Nov Town Hall
Jimmy Webb, his father Bob Webb, and his sons, The Webb Brothers - Christiaan, Justin, James and Cornelius - take the stage together for the first time to perform as a three-generation family band. The family will perform Jimmy Webb classics as well as notable Webb Brothers tunes. Tim Walker joins the band on pedal steel, with Cal Campbell on drums. The new outfit combines the rock sensibility and youthful production of the younger Webbs with the timeless Americana grandeur of their father’s symphonic songs. Jimmy Webb is the only artist ever to receive Grammy awards for music, lyrics, and orchestration. He’s been covered by Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, James Taylor, Kris Kristofferson, Waylon Jennings, Arlo Guthrie, Barbra Streisand, R.E.M., Linda Ronstadt, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Art Garfunkel, Shawn Colvin and Joe Cocker, and provided instant classics for Glen Campbell in _By The Time I Get To Phoenix_, _Wichita Lineman_, _Galveston_, plus Richard Harris and Donna Summer with _MacArthur Park_, _Didn’t We_ and the Fifth Dimension hit _Up, Up and Away_. As a performer, he blends his swift, biting sense of humor with elegant renditions of his classic songs. The Webb Brothers grew up immersed in music from an early age and were soon recording and performing together. They amassed a loyal cult following while releasing three records on Warner Brothers during the early 2000s. The critically acclaimed _Maroon_ was, according to The Guardian, 2000’s best all round reviewed album in the UK, making numerous top ten lists.
*Please note: This event has moved from Symphony Hall to Town Hall.

Beverley Knight Plus Special Guests
Mon 23 Nov Symphony Hall
Beverley Knght returns to Symphony Hall this November. Bev has been working hard, giving it one hundred percent. Producing her 6th studio album is a job she takes very seriously and the UK’s Soul Queen spent much of 2008 and the early part of this year locked away, writing and recording. Collaborating with the likes of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, (multi Grammy award winning producers of Janet Jackson’s multi million selling albums among many others) Amanda Ghost (co writer of Beyonce and Shakira’s Beautiful Liar), and former collaborators Jimmy Hogarth (Duffy) and Guy Chambers, amongst others, shows that she means business. The results due out late this summer may surprise a few... "Click here for the chance to win":http://www.beverleyknight.com/competition/ a VIP * gig package and to receive a free download clip of the demo _Money Back_ taken from Beverley's forthcoming 6th studio album, _100%_, released 7th September (applies to ticket holders only)." *VIP Package - We are giving away 10 pairs of passes to meet Beverley Knight. Each winner will receive a signed programme and a laminate with competition winner's name on it (applies to ticket holders only).

George Thorogood Plus Support
Sun 24 May Symphony Hall
Thorogood and his band the Destroyers fought their way to the top. They came out of Delaware in the ‘70s as a jarringly high-energy bunch whose raucous, slide guitar-stoked, blues-rock takes on tunes by Chuck Berry, Elmore James, Bo Diddley and others, helped land them a record contract. Further fame came in the '80s through a series of gold records by the band, including Thorogood's best-known hit, _Bad to the Bone_. New album Hard Stuff keeps the faith with covers of tracks by John Lee Hooker, Jimmy Reed and Fats Domino.

Candi Staton plus special guest Bridgette Amofah
Sat 21 Feb Town Hall
Southern soul is back and so is its First Lady - Candi Staton, who racked up 16 grits and gravy R&B/Pop hits between 1969-1974 such as the Grammy-nominated “In the Ghetto” and the swamp boogie of “I’m Just A Prisoner (Of Your Good Lovin’).” After detours into disco during Jimmy Carter’s administration and a twenty-year return to the gospel of her youth, Staton is back on the path that first established her name. She’s also back with the follow-up to her acclaimed 2006 Honest Jons/EMI CD His Hands - her first secular LP in 24 years. Featuring tunes by noted songwriters such as Will Oldham, Mary Gauthier, Dann Penn, and Staton herself - the new project Who’s Hurting Now? is a defiant, brutal musical storybook on the ups and downs of love and life. Orchestra of the Swan: Tasmin Little plays Mendelssohn
Sun 10 May Town Hall
In 2009 we celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Mendelssohn and the death of Haydn with two of their most iconic works. Composed at the height of his powers, Haydn’s _Surprise_ Symphony is full of wit, humour and of course, surprises - and like all the best jokes, it can be told again and again. The Priests Plus support Camilla Kerslake
Sat 29 May Symphony Hall
We are delighted to announce, after a phenomenal 2009 including some live dates across the UK and selling close to 2 million records world wide, The Priests play Symphony Hall this May. It was at St. MacNissi’s College near Carnlough in Co Antrim, where Father Eugene O’Hagan, Father Martin O’Hagan and Father David Delargy met for the first time and realised their musical prowess as a singing trio. The Priests have defied record industry convention by just being themselves; middle-aged Roman Catholic priests who sing. Selling close to two million records worldwide to date, a dream story of world class talent wrapped up in an amazing true story spanning a turbulent lifetime of service, faith and music, with no stunts, no stylists, no make-up, no image and no audio trickery. The Priests have taken the world by storm. Why the success? They simply sing and they sing with belief.

Steeleye Span 40th Anniversary Tour
Fri 27 Nov Town Hall
*Part of Town Hall 175th Anniversary Series.* In a world where bands come and go in the blink of an eye, the enduring success of Steeleye Span is one of the great stories in rock music. 2009 will see them celebrate an incredible forty years together, an achievement made all the more remarkable by the fact that the band has seldom been more active in its career. The current line-up of Maddy Prior, Peter Knight, Liam Genockey, Ken Nicol and Peter Zorn will come to the stage for this very exciting year in the history of Steeleye. At a period in their career when most bands are happy to settle down to rehashing past glories, Steeleye Span have pushed on with a succession of acclaimed albums, each seeing them re-define their classic sound. Their fortieth anniversary year will be spent in much the same way as every other; they will play live (two UK tours, plus visits to Australia and USA) and make music, releasing a new album that will typically see them buck their own trend and go back to their roots, the interpretation of traditional song. This though, has always been the Steeleye way. Tied not to the past, the present or the future - simply timeless.

Bill Bailey's Remarkable Guide to the Orchestra
Sun 8 Nov Symphony Hall
Following on from last year’s sell out shows at the Royal Albert Hall and the critically acclaimed version on BBC2, Bill Bailey’s surreal comic and musical imagination is let loose once more as he brings this show to Symphony Hall. Performing with some of the finest orchestras throughout Britain, accompanied by Anne Dudley, one of the UK’s most celebrated composers and arrangers. At Symphony Hall he will be joined by the CBSO. A classically trained musician, Bill has for many years covered all kinds of music in his comedy and this show takes the form of an irreverent guide to the instruments of the orchestra, plus 70s cop show music, news themes, Bill’s own songs, and some of Anne’s specially written new works. Hear the trombone’s affection for Cockney music, and find out what bassoon players are secretly obsessed with. It's a unique show which The Times called ‘blissfully funny’ and which Stephen Fry described as _“wonderfully enjoyable... like driving a Rolls-Royce off-road’_ "See a taster of the show here.":http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pterg8o2Zc4&feature=related *Bill Bailey’s Remarkable Guide To The Orchestra will be released on DVD on Monday 23 November 2009*

Courtney Pine presents Transition in Tradition, with support from Omar Puente
Wed 3 Mar 2010 Town Hall
Saxophonist Courtney Pine, who was awarded a C.B.E for services to music in the 2009 New Year Honours is back touring with his critically acclaimed Transition in Tradition album set. Courtney’s 12th album and his debut release on his own label Destin-e World, not only pays tribute to the first great saxophone star Sidney Bechet, but also marks several new forays into sound for the groundbreaking Jazz Warrior. Pulling together a heavyweight musical line-up that draws influences from Africa, the Caribbean, South America and Europe, the set is as deep as the legacy of jazz, as it is reflective of their collective musical heritage. A change in instrumentation sees Pine's Bass Clarinet take centre stage on many occasions, alongside Harmonium, Castanets and Mandolin and the resulting sound is like no other Courtney Pine record. _"Of course I pay respect to the great Bechet by playing a silver soprano saxophone like his, but there are other flavours like my Alto Flute playing on The Tale Of Joe Harriott and of course that Caribbean groove"_. 4* "..Laden with memorable melodies, his best album since his 1986 debut" *Observer Music Monthly* 5/5 "Pine is superb..." *The Guardian* "....top of his form..." *The Independent*

Folk4Free English Originals Weekend 2010
Sat 15 May Symphony Hall Foyer Bars
An afternoon of free folk music, curated by Moseley Folk Festival. *Dave Boddison* has been writing music for ten years and performing for seven. His solo acoustic sound hovers in the realms of ambient folk. 23-year-old *Abie Budgen* combines psychedelic, roots and blues sounds with finger-picking. As a child, *Deborah Hodgson* earned her first guitar by washing cars. Although not the most glamorous start to a career, she has now performed in festival fields, castles, a cathedral crypt and a major arena tour supporting 10CC. _‘Fantastic voice’_ Nick Britten, Daily Telegraph *Goodnight Lenin* caught the attention of audiences in Birmingham after releasing a YouTube video of a simple acoustic performance in which they sat perched on the counter-tops of their kitchen. The group attribute their sound to Bob Dylan and Elvis Perkins, mixing folk with a heavy American influence. 2010 is set to be a great year for the band as they supported First Aid Kit on the Birmingham leg of the duo’s UK tour and will be releasing their first limited edition single in the summer. Yet despite this, they can still be found performing amongst the pots and pans in kitchens. Growing up listening to Abba and Queen, *Megan Henwood* first performed at the tender age of nine. Turning eighteen she played her way round the world, singing to crowds in Venice, Thailand, India and Malaysia. After falling in love with Nepal, she has returned to Kathmandu twice to record with leading Nepalese musicians Nirmal Kulu, Binod Katal and Shyram Saram Nepali. In 2009 Megan won the BBC Radio 2 Young Folk Musician of the Year Award.

In the second of our ‘Ultimate Romantics’ concerts, the high-voltage combination of Esa-Pekka Salonen and the Philharmonia Orchestra unleash one of the ultimate and most gorgeous of all romantic experiences. Schoenberg’s lavish _Gurrelieder_ is the epic and supernatural tale of King Waldemar and his love for Tove, resident of castle Gurre. Courtney Pine & Jazz Warriors Afropeans
Thu 26 Mar Town Hall
_"...barnstorming solos, delicate bowed strings, skanking reggae backing tailgate trombones, foot-stamping chains. Hugely entertaining."_ (The Times) In October 2007, Courtney Pine led a freshly minted Jazz Warriors in the Afropeans project - a concert and award-winning album to mark the Bicentenary of the Abolition of the Slave Trade act in the UK. Now, this extraordinary ensemble returns to tour the UK, with a mouth-watering line-up that crosses generations of leading UK jazz soloists, including the likes of Jason Yarde, Alex Wilson and Omar Puente, rubbing shoulders with newcomers-to-watch Shabaka Hutchings and Ayanna Witter-Johnson - with a host of sensational reviews for both CD and live concerts. Afropeans Jazz Warriors picks up where the original Jazz Warriors left off - this seminal big band, formed in the 80s to celebrate the rich heritage of Afro-Caribbean jazz that contributed massively to the UK jazz scene since the 50s, is re-invented for a new century. With a _"kick-ass line-up"_ (All About Jazz) and music that is _"irresistibly vibrant"_, Afropeans was just too good not to have an extended outing. This show was recently seen in London and was given great reviews: _"The emotional heat is as potent as ever in Courtney Pine's national tour."_ The Telegraph _"A joyous celebration of survival in adversity, portrayed through an evocation of the musical encounters and collisions engendered across centuries of the African diaspora."_ The Telegraph _"Samuel Dubois's solos on steel pans were beautifully focused; Shabaka Hutchings's tightly patterned clarinet solos kept everyone spellbound."_ The Telegraph "Courtney Pine Interview":http://thejazzbreakfast.wordpress.com/2009/03/22/courtney-talks-about-afropeans/ £16.50, £18.50 presented in association with the Drum
featuring Courtney Pine (saxophone & clarinet) Chris Storr, Colin Graham, Mark Crown (trumpets), Trevor Edwards (trombone), Jason Yarde, Shabaka Hutchins (reeds), Omar Puente (violin), Ayanna Witter-Johnson (cello, voice), Alex Wilson (piano), Samuel Dubois (steel pan), Darren Taylor (bass), Robert Fordjour (percussion), Donald Gamble (percussion)
