Mahler's Fourth Symphony CBSO

Manfred Honeck
Mahler’s Fourth is on a comparatively modest scale after his enormous first three symphonies. But it still evokes passions along the way to its finale in which we hear a child (voiced today by a superb young Danish soprano) sing of the joys of heaven.
Wagner also contrasted visions of heaven with rather earthier delights but in the Prelude to Lohengrin you hear his music at its purest, in a shimmering portrayal of the Holy Grail that is the opera’s subject. Sine Bundgaard also offers a further centenary tribute to Grieg via a collection of his most familiar songs.
