Now in its 166th year, the British Open is the oldest and finest brass contest in the world.

This year’s competition, supported by Besson Buffet Crampon Instruments, features the top British bands including Cory, Black Dyke, Brighouse and Rastrick, Fodens, Faireys and Grimethorpe as well as 2017 European Champions Eikanger-Bjorsvik from Norway and defending Champions Valaisia from Switzerland

The set work, ‘A Brussels Requiem’ by Belgian composer Bert Appermont makes its UK contest debut at Symphony Hall.

The composition reflects on the tragic circumstances of the terrorist attacks in the Belgian capital in March 2016 that left many innocent people dead and injured, and through a series of beautifully lyrical solos provides an uplifting message of hope.
