“My soul doth magnify the Lord!” Johann Sebastian Bach contemplates God, and his imagination catches fire: even he never wrote anything more joyous and more richly inspired than his Magnificat. Two famous cantatas and the resplendent Orchestral Suite No. 3 provide the upbeat to this celebration with Ex Cathedra of one of music’s most beautiful minds.

This concert can be purchased as part of a CBSO Concert Package or Ex Cathedra subscription series. Discounts may vary – please check when booking.

Two famous cantatas and the resplendent Orchestral Suite No.3 provide the upbeat to this celebration by Ex Cathedra and the CBSO of one of music’s most beautiful minds.

The concert opens with Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, which Bach based on one of Martin Luther's most famous hymns, as Ex Cathedra mark the Reformation Day 500 anniversary.

Pre-concert conversation at 6:15pm with Jeffrey Skidmore, who explores the context in which Bach composed the cantatas performed in the concert, including the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s 95 theses and the Reformation. Musical examples will be performed by Ex Cathedra’s Girls Academy of Vocal Music conducted by Susannah Vango.
