“Pathétique” means “full of emotion”, and a great performance of Tchaikovsky’s tragic Sixth Symphony leaves you feeling like you’ve lived a lifetime in barely an hour. Expect the full experience today, because the Taiwan Philharmonic is one of the most dynamic of Asian orchestras, and under music director Shao-Chia Lu they play like a dream. Pianist Kit Armstrong, meanwhile, has to be heard to be believed in the unashamedly tuneful concerto that Saint-Saëns wrote while on a cruise to Egypt.
