French composers know all the secrets of the organ, and they take centre stage today. The major work is Franck’s deeply moving and lyrical Prière, followed by two contrasting Suites - Françaix’s elegant musical portraits of six Carmelite nuns, and Boëllmann’s ever-popular Gothic Suite, ending with the famous Toccata that is guaranteed to bring the house down! There is also music from England and Germany - the rollicking high spirits of John Ireland’s Capriccio, and sparkling miniatures by tragic young composer Hugo Distler, driven to suicide by the Nazis in 1942
