Exiled from Russia, Rachmaninov took the sounds of the Art Deco era and reached deep into his own soul to create a symphony like no other: bittersweet, bejewelled and drenched in heartfelt song. Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla loves it: the perfect match for Copland’s jazzy concerto (played by Birmingham’s own Oliver Janes) and another of her private passions – a zingy Russian ballet by one of Shostakovich’s greatest friends.
