In 1949 Birmingham Town Hall hosted two performances by American actor, singer and civil rights activist, Paul Robeson. 69 years later, his godson returns to Birmingham to perform. A progressive preservationist and a fiery singer with true soul, gospel and folk roots; it will be an honour to welcome Eric Bibb back to the Town Hall stage.
Growing up, I rarely saw my godfather, but somehow, he was always around. Paul Robeson had that larger-than-life, expansive energy that embraced me early on.
He was my dad's (Leon Bibb) hero. As an artist and as a courageous champion of human rights he was my dad's mentor and friend.
There's a photo in the family album of Paul holding me in one arm and my twin sister in the other at our christening. I feel like he's still got his arm around me.
Through the years, my musical journey has led me to follow in his footsteps. Elderly audience members at several of my concerts in Wales remember hearing him perform on the same stages. It's an exhilarating experience that I look forward to again when I bring the band to Birmingham Town Hall on Thursday, May 3rd.
Hope you can join us!
