The dark and sinister domain of Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, captured in a new production by the Philharmonia Orchestra in association with Yeast Culture, will be brought to life for its world premiere at Symphony Hall on Friday 21 October.
The trailblazing new take on BartÃ³k’s one-act libretto merges the digital with the orchestral, and the operatic with the fantastic. A video installation will transform the stage into the Duke’s lair, projecting shapes, colours and forms around the orchestra and singers live on stage.
An exclusive video featuring behind the scenes footage and interviews with key production members has been produced by the Philharmonia ahead of the first performance.
The Independent’s classical music writer Jessica Duchen recently interviewed Yeast Culture’s Creative Director Nick Hillel and the Philharmonia Orchestra’s Principal Conductor Esa-Pekka Salonen on the work which went into creating such a powerful multimedia installation as part of the performance of Bartok’s one-act opera.
Town Hall and Symphony Hall presents Duke Bluebeard’s Castle as part of a continuing commitment to exploring the relationship between audio and visuals, following on from the success of innovative and immersive events such as the Philharmonia’s incredible production of Tristan und Isolde with visuals by video artist Bill Viola, Houston Symphony’s The Planets – An HD Odyssey and an incredible 3D production of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring – all performed at Symphony Hall in the past year.
First composed in 1911, completed in 1917 and premiered in 1918, Duke Bluebeard’s Castle (or A kÃ©kszakÃ¡llÃº herceg vÃ¡ra) was based on a French fairy tale by Charles Perrault. Just over an hour in length and featuring two singing characters, the work is Bela BartÃ³k’s one and only opera.
