Jazzlines present a special performance by Gonimoblast

On Friday 10th February Jazzlines are delighted to be working in partnership with SOUNDkitchen and University of Birmingham to present a special performance by Gonimoblast with the immersive sonic experience of Birmingham Electro Acoustic Sound Theatre (BEAST) system.

An edgy marriage of improvisation and live electronics, Gonimblast combines measures of harsh, dark experimental tones, mixed with joyful clashes. Led by Birmingham bass player and composer Chris Mapp the group was the focus of his Jazzlines Fellowship in 2014/2015 supported by the Jerwood Charitable Foundation. During his fellowship year Chris produced a series of recordings (which can be discovered here) with the group, receiving widespread acclaim and a number of airplays on national radio including BBC Radio 3’s Late Junction presented by Fiona Talkington. The culmination of the fellowship saw two very special live performances featuring collaborations with two of Europe’s leading improvising musicians Maja Ratkje and Arve Henriksen.

The immensity of the sound created was great and grand – an enormous space seemed to open up, reverberating with multi-layered bass frequencies which sometimes swelled with each other, sometimes bounced off, usually threw up new combined resonances.

Following the success of these previous collaborations Chris is looking forward to the new experience of working with the BEAST system which allows artists to create vivid and unique sound worlds, which immerse the listener in a new and engaging sonic experience.

I’m really excited at working with BEAST and exploring the sonic possibilities of the BEASTdome. We’ve been involved with multi-channel performances before but nothing on this scale. I’m particularly interested to see how the spatilisation of the music we create effects the direction of the performance and the dynamic of the ensemble. It’s great to have a hook up with creative musicians from the electroacoustic scene and collaborating with BEAST will be an exciting and fresh challenge for us.

Performing alongside him in Gonimoblast for this performance will be Percy Pursglove (trumpet), Leafcutter John (Electronics) and Mark Sanders (drums and percussion). For more information and to buy tickets visit the University of Birmingham’s BEAST website
