Bring Your Own Baby co-founder Alyssa Kyria chats to Town Hall Symphony Hall about the UK’s premier baby friendly comedy club.
Carly Smallman and I came up with the idea for Bring Your Own Baby together over a glass of wine. I had recently had my daughter Lola, and I was going through a tough time. I was struggling with breastfeeding, and felt very nervous feeding in public, as Lola would scream….I would panic and we both would usually end up crying! I sank into a nasty bout of PND, and I think a lot of that was due to feeling like I couldn't leave the house for fear of being judged when I was just generally trying to 'mum' in public!
Carly, a fellow comic and great friend of mine, told me how her sister, a single Mum, had also found Motherhood very isolating, and struggled with her confidence when going out on the 'Mum dating scene'. We decided to pool our comedy talents and create something special for parents. Parents who attend have said to us that our shows make them “feel like myself again, not just a parent”
We provide everything to ensure that no-one at our gigs has to go through the nerves and panic that I once did. We have baby changing, buggy parking, soft flooring and toys for the babies. More importantly, we bring the top comics in the UK to entertain the parents.
We are so thrilled to be working with the Birmingham Symphony Hall. It’s such a stunning and prolific venue and we are so excited that this will be our Birmingham home!
