Town Hall Symphony Hall Jazzlines’ free foyer gigs have been a staple of Friday evenings at Symphony Hall for over a decade. In that time, the gigs have built up a loyal following, often seeing the foyers filled with jazz enthusiasts, music students and professionals starting their weekends early.
As well as programming these gigs, the THSH Jazzlines team connect thousands of children and young people to jazz, with a focus on talent development.
From pop-up performances at lunchtimes in Birmingham’s Great Western Arcade, to one-to-one tuition from some of the UK’s finest jazz musicians – Jazzlines is empowering young, diverse performers and building new audiences, all with the aim of becoming the best jazz programme in the country.
The Jazzlines Free Foyer sessions audience is a wonderful community of over 250 live music lovers and we appreciate their long standing loyalty to the music and to our fantastic venue. The generosity from this audience has exceeded expectation - this money is crucial for the continuation of Jazzlines and its commitment to its renowned Talent Development and Artistic Programme.Mary Wakelam-Sloan, Jazzlines Manager
One of the big success stories of the Jazzlines programme is Shivraj Singh (pictured above). Shivraj has been with the programme for six years, coming through various stages of participation. From student in 2011 to playing his first free gig as band leader in 2018, Shivraj has been a huge champion for Jazzlines and for THSH.
Jazzlines has been a huge part of my life, from a very young age – I’ve come from being a student in the first ever Jazzlines Summer School 2011/12 to becoming a student tutor on the Summer School in 2018. Jazzlines has supported and continues to support me on my journey.Shivraj Singh, participant of the Jazzlines Talent Development Programme for 6 years
