The BBC were on site at Symphony Hall for a live broadcast of one of the Birmingham Classical concerts, live from Symphony Hall. The brilliant London Sinfonietta returned to Birmingham for the first time in six years to perform an an all-Reich programme, broadcast on BBC Radio 3, who boast an average of 1,826,000 listeners per week.

Ahead of this, the BBC visited Symphony Hall as part of a training day for their Broadcast Engineer and Broadcast Operator Apprentices.  The aim was to give them an insight into the detail involved in planning a big event, and to give them some practical experience of making decisions about how to stage a broadcast.

Peter Taylor the lead for live events for the BBC, shared his knowledge and expertise and challenged the apprentices to come with a plan for two pretend scenarios; an Awards Show in the Symphony Hall and a Gospel Choir Competition in ICC Hall 1.

Peter Taylor, Production Engineering Manager for the BBC explains:

I know from my own experience that both are great venues to work in and lend themselves so well to Broadcasting.  For both groups, using their imagination as to how the scenarios could be staged and covered with cameras and microphones, the venues provided inspiration and I could absolutely envisage their bold ideas being made into real programmes”.

As always, the support of the Production Managers in the venues is key to the success of any event and Kat and Andy were the perfect hosts providing friendly advice and information, as if the students were planning real events."
