In the last of a four-part BBC 2 series, The Birth of British Music celebrates the 200th anniversary of the birth of Felix Mendelssohn. A dazzling composer, conductor, pianist and organist, he developed a strong relationship with Birmingham, visiting several times and composing new works for Birmingham’s triennial musical festivals. The programme concludes with excerpts from one of these – his oratorio Elijah, specially recorded in Town Hall Birmingham where it was premiered in 1846, featuring a massed choir from the West Midlands.
The Birth of British Music: Mendelssohn is on BBC 2 on Saturday 30 May, 7.30pm
The programme can be viewed for a week after the broadcast on BBC iplayer and more information and extra video and interview footage can be found at http://www.bbc.co.uk/composers/mendelssohn/.
